Goals
:You will learn to analyze phonological data, understand classic and current theories of phonology, and read and write phonology papers, so you can apply and contribute to the development of phonology.
Readings
(do them before class!)Textbook: Gussenhoven, Carlos, and Haike Jacobs. 2005. Understanding phonology (second edition). London: Arnold. ["G&J"]
Grading
:60% Exercises
40% Term paper [due 2008/1/14]
The phonology exercises are due at the beginning of class. You are encouraged to share ideas with your fellow students (in this class), but you must hand in your own answers.
The term paper (12 pages maximum, plus references, double-spaced, in English) should solve a theoretical problem posed by a specific phonological pattern in a specific language. You MUST decide on a paper topic by 12.10 -- no major changes after this date!! The term paper itself is due in my mailbox before 5 pm on 1.14. When I grade, I will focus on your organization, logic, and understanding of the theoretical issues discussed in class.
We will also discuss some phonology papers and practice a bit of laboratory phonology. If you want to write your term paper about Chinese, I strongly recommend using laboratory phonology techniques, since otherwise it will be very hard to find anything new to say.
